What is Rotary?

Rotary International is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers. Rotary members see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — in their communities, in themselves, and around the world.

Rotary is not just a club — it's a global movement. Our members are business leaders, doctors, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and retirees united by a shared belief that we can make the world a better place.

How It All Began

On 23 February 1905, attorney Paul P. Harris gathered three friends — Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey — in a small office in downtown Chicago. The idea was simple: a group of professionals who meet regularly, build friendships, and do something good for their community. That simple idea grew into the world's largest service organization.

Paul Percy Harris (1868–1947) was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and grew up with his grandparents in Vermont. After studying law, he traveled across the United States and Europe before settling in Chicago. The loneliness of the big city inspired him to create a club where professionals from different fields could meet, exchange ideas, and serve their community. His vision of 'Service Above Self' continues to inspire millions around the world.

The Four-Way Test

Created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, The Four-Way Test is an ethical compass that guides Rotarians in their personal and professional decisions. Before we say or do anything, we ask:

1

Is it the TRUTH?

2

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Seven Areas of Focus
